Nail Conditions

Nail conditions are usually misdiagnosed and treated as fungal nail infection. Factors and medical conditions can impact the health of a nail and present similarly to fungal nail.

The podiatrists at Foot Lab Podiatry are highly trained and experienced in diagnosing various nail conditions and are able to provide the correct advice and treatment options. In certain cases, the podiatrist may suggest further investigation such as pathology nail clipping testing or blood tests.

Nail conditions can vary from any of the following:

Fungal nail infection

fungal nail infection, also known as onychomycosis or tinea unguium, occurs when a fungus that’s normally in your fingernails or toenails overgrows. The fungal infection can spread rapidly to other toes if left untreated.

Signs and Symptoms:

  • Thickened nails
  • Yellow, discoloured nails
  • Brittle nails
  • Separation of the nail from the nail bed

At Foot Lab Podiatry an initial nail assessment, history taking and diagnostic test will be used to determine if fungal nail is present and the cause.

Treatment:

Fungal Nail Laser is the number one treatment available to kill the enzyme causing the nail fungus, promoting healthy nail growth with a success rate of 70-83% effective after a single treatment.

Ingrown toenail

An ingrown nail occurs when the skin on one or both sides of a nail grows over the edges of the nail, or when the nail itself grows into the skin

Signs and symptoms:
– redness and swelling on the affected side
– pain
– puss formation

Treatment:

Conservatively removing the ingrown toenail treatment, Onyfix, Keryflix or Ingrown toenail surgery

Psoaratic nail

Nail psoriasis is an autoimmune disease that causes discoloration, pitting and changes in the structure of your nails.

Signs and Symptoms:

– Brittle and thin nails
– White streaks on the nails

Treatment:
Medical pedicure alongside topical nail solutions such as Nail Revive

Subungual heamotoma

Subungual hematomas are injuries of the nail bed in which bleeding develops under the nail.

Signs and Symptoms

– Can be painful
– Bruising of the nail
– Nail lifting from nail bed

Treatment:
Podiatrist can drain the blood out of the nail and can cut the nail back or remove completely.
