The most common cause of a painful toe is an ingrown toenail.
An ingrown toenail also known as Onychocryptosis is a condition in which the nail penetrates the corner or side of a toenail (Sulci), commonly the big toe. Ingrown toenails can be experienced by all ages. Medical conditions such as diabetes and certain medication can also increase the risk of ingrown toenails.
Experiencing an ingrown toenail can be very painful, sore and reduce your quality of life. If an ingrown toenail is left untreated it can lead to an infection and possibly require an Ingrown toenail Surgery.
What causes an ingrown toenail?
Some people just naturally have toenails that are more curved than normal. This can lead to consistent ingrown toenails over time.
- If you trim your toenails too short, particularly on the sides of your big toes, you may set the stage for an ingrown toenail.
- Tight or narrow footwear placing excessive pressure on the big toe
- Trauma from bumping your toe or constant trauma
- Family history
At Foot Lab Podiatry, our experienced podiatrists can assess and confirm the severity of the ingrown toenail. Our highly experienced podiatrists have seen all sorts of ingrown toenail conditions ranging from mild to severe and have managed to resolve all cases. Treatments
If an ingrown toenail is still in the mild stage, the below suggestions may help to resolve or alleviate symptoms.
- Don’t cut your nails down the side, it is recommended to cut the nails straight or slightly curved not to short on the sides.
- Filing the toenail is a very safe alternative and helps to get rid of any rough edges.
- Wearing open toe shoes or wider footwear to alleviate pressure from the affected toenail.
- Foot soaks with Epsom salts or soapy water can help.
- Applying antiseptic such as betadine, iodine, alcohol wipe, saline or hydrogen peroxide to the affected area then covering with a band aid daily to keep the area clean from infection until the pain disappears.
If symptoms persist, it is important to book an appointment with Foot Lab Podiatry. Our podiatrists will undertake a thorough history and physical examination, provide education and discuss possible treatment options. Based on the client’s preference and goal, a management plan is implemented to assist in permanently resolving the ingrown toenail surgically if required.
