Corn removal
- Do you have a painful lump of hard skin on the bottom of your feet?
- Have you tried corn pads from the pharmacy without success?
What are corns?
Corns are a round seed of hard rough skin that occurs as a result of friction and excessive pressure. They present as a yellowish patch of skin that can be raised or round. Depending on the area of the corn and what type of corn it is, they can really cause a lot of pain and affect your walking. Corns are also commonly misdiagnosed as warts and treated incorrectly. Our qualified podiatrists can help you address the causative factor of the corn, relieve your pain by physically treating the corn and find you a long term solution.
What causes corns?
A corn can occur from repetitive pressure and friction on a localised area of the foot leading thickened skin forming to protect the underlying tissue. The skin is unable to repair itself the same rate as the pressure damage resulting in a corn. Determining the causative factor and the correct diagnosis is crucial to the success of the treatment.
The repetitive microtrauma can be as result of several factors and each cause is addressed accordingly. These factors include:
- Tight footwear can cause friction and pressure on certain areas of the feet resulting in the development of corns. Footwear should always have enough room to wiggle your toes leaving adequate space for your forefoot and toes. In such cases, a change of footwear can lead to the corn not re-occurring.
- Biomechanical abnormalities
- Foot deformities
- Activity related
Podiatry treatments
Corns need to be physically debrided and enucleated by a professional podiatrist at Prestons Foot Lab Podiatry. There are several foot corn treatments which can be used as a standalone or combination treatment to resolve the corn.
- Debridment of the corn consists of debriding the overlaying hard skin of the corn then enucleating the seed centre. The process is quick, painless and relief is experienced immediately.
- Use cushion padding over high pressure areas on your feet that are prone to corns.
- If you are consistently experiencing corns, our podiatrists will perform a biomechanical foot and gait assessment to identify any biomechanical stress that is causing the corn. From the assessment findings, we can prescribe an orthotic which can relieve pressure and redistribute forces evenly. Custom-made orthotics can be used as a long-term solution to address the mechanical forces causing the corn to stop the corn from reoccurring.
In severe cases where the corns are extremely painful and deep, surgical intervention may be required.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if I have a corn?
If the lesion on your foot is thickened skin with a seed like appearance in the centre then it most likely a corn. When the lesion has a cauliflower appearance and black dots it is most likely a wart.
Can corns re-occur?
Depending on the causative factor of the corn, it may come back. For instance, if the corn is caused by the way you walk, the only way to prevent the corn from reoccurring is to offload the pressure of the affected area through orthotics.
What is the best treatment for corns?
Professional removal of the corn, by a podiatrist, using a scalpel blade is a natural and effective way in treating and removing corns.
